This book traces the lives of William Herring and Jane Isabella Jenkins.
William was born in 1852 in Picton NSW. His parents were James Herring and Mary Gilmore. His occupation was horseman, farmer, bullock team driver, gold miner.
Jane was born in 1852 in Camden, NSW. Her parents were William Jenkins and Eliza Tully. Jane was a country woman in the truest sense of the word. As well as being an able horsewoman and farm hand she helped her family and neighbours with medical help and brought many children into the world with her midwifery skills.
William and Jane were married at St. Matthew’s Church of England, The Oaks, NSW on 5.1.1876.
Shortly after their marriage they rode on horseback to the NSW country town of Gundagai. The settled on a property they named “Mt. Pleasant” and produced a family of eleven children - Mabel Eliza 1877, Beatrice Mary 1878, William 1880, Madeline Sybella 1881, James 1884, John 1886, Lavina 1887, Reginald Montague 1889, Thomas Frederick 1891, Elizabeth Elsie Margaret 1893 and Sarah Eileen Edwina Gilmore 1896.
William and Jane were well known pioneers of the Gundagai district.
William died in 1936 aged 83 from congestion of the lungs and chronic myocarditis. Jane died in 1939 aged 86 from myocarditis. They are buried together in Gundagai North
Cemetery.
Detailed family tree information in the book shows the other families connected to the Herring family. They are Brown, Maher, Carr, Wales, Rowlands, McKinnon, Briggs and Watson families.
Other NSW towns where the Herring children settled were Cootamundra, Coolac, Willoughby, Young, Paddington, Hamilton (Vic) and Stanmore.
The book, published in 2009, is A4 sized, wire spiral bound and has 400 pages. It includes 330 photographs (sepia, black & white and colour), certificates, newspaper articles, letters and cards.
