Mark Gregory Riddle, son of William Riddle and Julianna Pemberton, was born on 4.4.1876 at Merlin Street, St. Leonards, NSW. He was a general carter and labourer.

On 16th March 1905 at Redfern, NSW he married Catherine Elizabeth Janes (daughter of William Joseph Janes and Catherine Jackson). Catherine was born 16.9.1882 at Mowbray Road, North Willoughby, NSW.

Mark and Catherine had a family of 11 children from 1905 to 1925 – William Thomas 1905, Mark Gregory 1906, Richard Henry 1908, Julia Anne Catherine Elizabeth 1910, Margurite May 1913, Alice Ellen 1914, Katie Louise 1915, Emily Mildred 1917, Mark Gregory 1919 (second child by that name), John Charles 1922 and Nellie May 1925.

Mark and Catherine’s children were born at Chatswood, Mosman, Roseville and Willoughby. When their children married they lived at Wyong, Willoughby, Forestville and Chatswood. The son’s occupations were general labourer, Council Employee (Manly Warringah Council) and Council Employee (Willoughby Council). Most of the females in the family did domestic duties.

Grandsons also worked as Council Employees – Alex Riddle, born 1943 worked at Mosman Council, Mark Gregory Riddle born 1941-2008 worked at Manly Warringah Council.

Mark died 7.10.1949 aged 72 at 18 Park Avenue, Roseville, NSW. Catherine died 25.5.1951 aged 68 at 18 Park Avenue, Roseville. They were buried together at Northern Suburbs Cemetery, North Ryde, now known as Macquarie Park Cemetery.

Seven of their children were also buried at Northern Suburbs Cemetery – Julia Ann Catherine Elizabeth in 1971, Alice Ellen in 1944, Katie Louise in 1990, Emily Riddle in 2017 (aged 100), Mark Gregory in 2006 and Nellie May in 1942.

The four remaining children were Mark Gregory in 1908, North Sydney NSW, William Thomas in 1973, Norah Head NSW, Margurite May in 1988, North Ryde NSW (crematorium) and John Charles in 1989, Ourimbah NSW.
