William Riddle, son of James Riddle and Ann Cadby, was born on 1.8.1840 in the Bellinger District of NSW. He was a sawyer/wood cutter and general carter.

On 6th May 1862 at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney, NSW he married Julianna Pemberton (daughter of William Pemberton and Hannah/Ann Bourke). Julianna was born 30.6.1844 in Sydney, NSW.

William and Julianna had a family of 11 children from 1862 to 1886 – William Thomas 1864, William Thomas 1866 (second child by that name), Emilia Maud Maria 1868, Richard Henry (Harry) 1870, Ellen 1872, Sarah Ellen 1873, Mark Gregory 1876, Anna Louisa 1878, Charles James 1880, Julie Anne 1883 and John Frederick (Jack) 1886.

All the children except Sarah Ellen were born in the St. Leonards area (lower north shore of Sydney). Sarah Ellen was born in 1873 at Tambaroora (near Hill End, NSW) when the family moved there in search of gold.

Some of the children died at a very young age – William Thomas in 1865 aged 15 months (cause diarrhoea), Ellen in 1872 aged 1 year (cause diarrhoea and convulsions) and Sarah Ellen in 1877 aged 3 ½ years ( cause diphtheria).

When the children of William and Julianna married they lived in Willoughby, North Sydney, St. Leonards, Roseville and French’s Forest. Their occupations were labourer, general carter and cab proprietor. Sadly, Charles James, cab proprietor sustained head injuries in an accident and died 31.7.1911 aged 30.

William died 13.10.1886 aged 46 after sustaining injuries of a fractured spine in an accident on 4.9.1886 when he was thrown from his cart. He was living at Carlow Street, North Sydney, at the time of the accident. He was buried at St. Thomas’ Cemetery, North Sydney. At the time of William’s death, Julianna had a 3 month old son and 6 other children.

Julianna died 11.10.1919 aged 75 at Coolgardie Street, Willoughby, at the residence of her daughter Julia Wilson. She was buried on her own in the Roman Catholic Section of Gore Hill Cemetery, St. Leonards, NSW.
